The study was conducted by the University of North Carolina's Center for the Study of Retired Athletes and based on a general health survey of 2,552 retired N.F.L. players.

I wonder how Steve Young is doing

The guy had to retire due to concussions

The last hit he took resulted in a concussion, and he was told the next one might result in brain damage.

with the decline of the 49'ers dynasty years came the decline of the SF OL, and I remember a year where that decline was exacerbated by injuries, and it was tough to watch a great like young take that abuse.

course, I'm in browns country and have had a little practice watching QB's get trainwrecked

The average life expectancy for NFL football players is 55. Why in the world would anybody in their right mind want to play football in the NFL? Fame and money for a very short period of time in their lives including all the pain and agony they endure day in and day out, is it really worth it? Can anybody really feel sorry for people who know or should know the hazards of playing football?

Can anybody really feel sorry for anyone that takes on a dangerous job? I think compassion is just gone sometimes...

I don't have compassion for stupidty. If you do, that's your prerogative. I also don't have compassion for people who are obese, drink alcohol, take illegal drugs, or smoke. Maybe, that's why I don't have American friends, because, gee, there aren't any people who don't do those things.

This is one reason I'm against serious contact sports for children.

Flag football's not too bad for the little kids and still kind of fun.

And you don't get your developmental or your neural damage.

Most people who have had some type of brain injury suffer from depression. This isn't new news.

I love football. BUT - even before children get immunizations parents are told of the possible side-effects. Do football players think that when their careers are over that they will emerge healthy, strong and as fit as the day they began? With no later surprises? I have to!

"..created a fund to help pay the medical expenses of players suffering from Alzheimer's disease or similar dementia."

Come on! These men make millions and they can't plan for the future in case of a possible unexpected illness with their own money?

and this just in....people who get beat with sticks 3 times a week are far more likely to be depressed than those who dont.

Gee... retired NFL players are depressed. Isn't that more likley to be because they realized that they were now just nobodies with no future beyond becoming Al Bundy? I mean most of them are so stupid to start with they know they would be lucky to get a job cleaning toilets at a McDonalds if they couldn't run with a ball. At some point when they get off the fantasy train they'll surely realize it. They are stupid, but not retarded.

wow.. eviln3d..

I think you may not know what you are talking about. NFL players must first graduate from collage to play in the NFL. (For most players) NFL mostly drafts from collage graduates when they finish with a viable collage degree. there is not a "Football" Major they can elect in collage and even thou most collage athletes want to make it to the "Big Show" in whatever sport they do. It is Mandatory they study to major in something as a profession other than sports to fall back on.

Hey I remember college, I recall seeing all the jr. and sr football players going to the first year pre-algebra class.

The NCAA requires they have a certain gpa, but the NCAA doesn't determine which classes they take. I knew lots of athletes that took the most insanely worthless classes simply to keep their gpa to play... when there elgibility to play was up they left college, may a few got drafted but rarely did any make mega bucks. Most were just used up by the college football machine and left to find work in a McDonalds.

Did you ever wonder why colleges had classes in things like bowling? It's to create fluff courses to inflate dumb athletes GPAs.

In Most big schools They must have above average grades to even play in collage. I know this because I am A football player who does not any longer play football. Not because of any injuries or anything like that. For most people who played football (or any other sport in which they were very competitive.) who don't play anymore for whatever reason will always a level of depression. Whether big amount or small they simply miss the sport. Not because of any injuries or anything like that. Athletes will always miss that the compositeness when they are out of the sport they love. With any sports player athletes know injuries happen IN ALL SPORTS. The depression simply comes from not being able to play any longer. It does happen when you get a stupid athlete in ALL sports who became nothing after they are done playing.

Normally, many factors are involved in their downfalls not just because they only know how to play sports.. Usually they make very poor decisions along the way. The majority of pro football players lead a very happy and productive life after football. But somewhere in every football player there will always be a part of them that would like to Strap it up and go play.

Surely it wouldn't be because they were coddled to much from jr high on, surely is wouldn't be because they actually started to believe that what they were doing amounted to anything.... surely it isn't because they finally figured out that their life was a joke, that once they left the limelight no one cared about them... surely not.
