As much as I really dislike Kurt Busch, I have to say that I admire the fact he took responsibility for taking Stewart out (although it wasnt really his fault). Great race and even greater finish.

avatar
Reply

I'm not a fan of Busch either but what he did was no different than what others have done (including Jeff Gordon) and they claim it as a part of racing. I saw Stewart take out Kenseth last year so like they say, what goes around comes around.

avatar

it sure looked like his fault... he got right into the back of him and Tony didn't really slow down. you cannot call that bump-drafting, because Tony did not need any help, there was plenty of room for Bush to get around him and they were in the middle of a curve... the worst place for bump-drafting. Busch blew it... he is right to apologize... and no, I'm not a big Tony fan, either. my driver is Dale Jr., who also unnecessarily got wiped out. that finish was one of the craziest ever... I was really rooting for Martin while my freshman daughter went into hysterics over her driver, Kevin Harvick, who is a nice guy, bi the way, very fan-friendly... stole my daughter's heart two years ago after Tony, who had been her driver since 1999 until he stood her and 20 others up at an advertised autographed signing for them both. Kevin called her a cutie and a doll and said that Tony made a mistake for leaving prematurely. He hugged her to console her and well, she was in heaven after that. lol.

i disagree. if you watch the replay carefully, you'll see that tony hit a bad spot on the track, which caused a minute speed reduction and rear end waggle, and THAT's what caused the wreck. the only thing bush can be blamed for is being too close, but then you'd have to blame stewart earlier in the race when their positions were reversed, as well as everybody else on the track. just one of those things.

I am glad Tony didn't win. I sure wish Mark Martin had won though.

avatar
Reply

Why wasn't the caution enacted? Martin should have had it.

avatar

The new rule of NASCAR, that has been in effect for a while, is that a race cannot end in a caution. They have a shoot out of a couple laps ( was three last year) to determine the winner and if there is another accident, the leader at the time is declared the winner. I think it had to do with the year that J. Gordon or Johnson (not sure which one) won by finishing the Daytona 500 race under caution and the fans were very angry because they felt like the others behind him were cheated.

True enough, but, technically, the "green-white-checker" is only valid for 1 try?...after that, if the yellow comes out again, the field is frozen and the race is over. So, this was a judgement call, allowing the 2 cars to race to the line - and - even though I am a Mark Martin fan (and he was leading when the 2nd caution COULDA come out), and like to root against Kevin Harvick - I'm glad the race ended as a race to the line.

avatar
Reply

I agree... Martin winning would have been great, but not freezing the field allowed for a dramatic finish... nothing would have changed the outcome of that race as far as another accident... and seeing Clint Bowyer, the jack daniels #07, skidding across the finish upside down is a NASCAR hall of fame highlight. Congrats to Kevin, who ran a great race. Good try, Mark... maybe next time.

avatar
Reply

Yeah: upside-down, on fire, sliding across the finish line. Woulda made Stroker Ace proud?

avatar
Reply

Remember back in the "old days" when a caution flag came out, everybody would race back to the start-finish line.

avatar
Reply

the accidents were behind them & stoll happening -they were too colse to the finish line - if cautions had been used it would have looked very suspicious & taken away a breath taking finish

avatar
Reply

If the accident happens behind the leaders, they finish that lap and the race is over. Not sure what happens if the leaders wreck.

avatar
Reply

IF the leaders wreck, the caution is thrown as deemed necessary and the field is frozen. had this happened in IRL last night, Martin would have been declared the winner since they freeze at the exact second of the beginning of the accident... boring. NASCAR made the right decision.

avatar
Reply

So, to follow the rules would have made it boring. Well, that answers the whole question posed about racing being a sport. It isn't- it's a psuedo-sport/entertainment. To the racers it is sport. Introduce subjectivity into a ruling to make the race more exciting for the consumers [oops fans and advertizers] and it's entertainment.

Great race, looked like old school racing before restrictor plats came in, good tire, good aero package, and great drivers. can't wait till next week.

I cannot understand why people enjoy watching cars go around and around in a circle.

The fans must be waiting for things like this to happen.

These are for the most part the same people who put Bush into office, twice....

they like wrecks and mayhem...

I'm supprised more liberals don't like NASCAR. After all the end game mirrors the liberals in congress(perception of doing a lot, but in the end, you just end up back where you started).

avatar
Reply

That's such pantywaste BS. Typical Limbaugh lover drivel. Just what I would expect from a NASCAR fan.

avatar
Reply

Typical liberal BS. NASCAR enjoys nationwide popularity, including blue states, although I can't understand why anybody would actually want to live in a blue state. Talk about hell on earth!

Is this a "TRUE" SPORT???????

To get off topic slightly. What is everyone thoughts of having a foreigner (Toyota) join NASCAR?

avatar
Reply

they make more Toyotas in America than Fords Chevs or Dodges? Toyota has done well in the truck series - this top level will be more difficult for them, but I think it's fun to have Toyota in the mix

avatar
Reply

very true...there is a major Toyota plant the next town over. They manufacture alot of cars here. I don't follow NASCAR intently like others but I was curious. When watching ESPN they mentioned it in the Daytona fine incidents. That's what made me think of it.

"To get off topic slightly. What is everyone thoughts of having a foreigner (Toyota) join NASCAR?"

Mixed feelings because Toyota is not an American company but it could be argued that neither is Chrysler. Toyota has assembly plants in America but most parts are made else where but Ford, Chrysler, and GM have parts made out side the U.S. In either case, I don't like it any more than someone using my toothbrush.

I feel like they ruined NASCAR when they started letting racers build their own car body. I liked the car when they were more like the cars we could buy.

I like the comment about the toothbrush. LOL!!!! My ex girlfriend wanted to use my toothbrush all the time. :)

A True Sport? Of course, according to Hemmingway, along with boxing, and bullfighting...maybe horse racing? Stick and ball activities are simply games. The really funny thing is seeing poker (as a sport?) on ESPN?

avatar
Reply

Poker is not a sport any more than checkers and chess. And a person in a wheel chair could kick you butt in poker.

The only time poker could be considered a sport is when a fight breaks out from someone cheating. LOL

avatar
Reply

look up the definition of 'sport' before you go around asserting your own RE-definitions. only in the modern era has the word sport been 'mandatorily' classified bi today's society as purely physical... revisionism at its best.

avatar
Reply

so...your point is - poker is a "sport?" By the way - are you the same Ted & Gilbert who made "art" in the 60's by painting themselves, wearing business suits, holding briefcases, and standing very, very still?

avatar
Reply

The first definition of sport is "1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc."

Granted the term sport has many broad meanings but in no way is poker an athletic activity. Competitive yes but athletic no. If you are going to call poker a sport than you have to call chess a sport and I haven't ever heard anyone call it that.

I wouldn't care if they had Borneo Motors enter NASCAR. I would rather watch grass grow or even paint dry.

Then why are you posting in this thread? Buh-bye.

Toyota

Sony

Panasonic

Shell

BP

A&P

Chrysler(Daimler)

HSBC

on & on lots of foreign Co.s employing lots of Americans

if American Co.s can't cut it too bad as long as there are major players to fill the void & give Americans jobs.

I watched Toyotas race at Daytona on my Sony HD

avatar
Reply

Yes, I watched the race on my Sony HD also but I'll never buy another Sony anything because I've never gotten anything Sony made that ever worked without going to the shop and that goes back to the first Sony BetaMax which I had to junk and buy a Sanyo. TV has a great picture but it's been fixed 3 times.

The real trick in watching NASCAR is to keep a log of how many sponsor's logo's you spot - the one with the most gets a cold Bud & a Marlboro

avatar
Reply

Yes, it was a great finish. The crashes were bad for the

drivers, but great for the fans. This is one reason they

pay big bucks to see a race. Ever notice how many flash

bulbs go off when they have a wreck.

Hey V.O.R. not all NASCAR fans voted for the idiot in charge of the country!!!!

And aceofspades1 if you like foreign products so well why not move overseas where the money is going, ever check the cost of living in Japan??? It is mindless dolts like you that has hurt our country. Example: Ford, Chevy, and dodge make cars just as well as the foreigners do. In fact the ford fusion beat the camry for quality this year, Gm has beaten Toyota in quality as well with the buick line-up 2years ago. And you could have bought a Zenith HD for about 40% less and they rate much higher at consumer reports. But you go ahead a blow your money on their products, in fact why don't you just go blow them.

avatar

quilly - did you know that Toyota is the largest idustrial employer in Kentucky? Where was Ford or GM or any other American car mfr. to open a plant there - I don't think the people who work for Toyota there are converting their wages to yen- They're putting the money right back into OUR economy. The moronic reply -"if you like foreign products so well why not move overseas where the money is going" is what I'd excpect from someone as dimwitted as you.Everything is being outsourced now - call customer service & you get to talk to someone you don't understand in Bombay-

At least foreign companies investing in the US are filling the void left by bankrupt American co.s & providing jobs for Americans - but I doubt you know much about having to work for a living

avatar
Reply

The truth, as much as I'm sure you'll hate to admit it, is that the "foreign" car companies are building assembly plants in the US while GM, Ford, and Chrysler and closing plants and laying people off left and right. Now, tell me again how bad the "foreign" car companies are??

This is one of the best races I have seen in awhile. You couldn't ask for a better finish, other than it would have been great if Clint Bowyer actually won the race on his hood!!

avatar
Reply

sieben,

what do you consider a real sport???

avatar
Reply

WHAT A GREAT RACE! I mean my guys didn't win, but the finish was exciting. I really wish Martin would have won. But anytime the Hendrick racing boys struggle, it's a good race. I can't stand how everyone thinks they are the best of the sport.

avatar
Reply

My definition of a sport is one in which athleticism in involved. All others are merely activities or hobbies. I mean does it take athleticism to drive a race car, no, talent yes, athleticism no.

avatar
Reply

without going into it too far, athletes of all stripes have to make instantaneous body decisions based on reaction to situations, and due to the safety suits and equipment in NASCAR, it takes a great deal of physical stamina to compete.

Basketball players, for instance, must react quickly to physical stimuli and interpret that stimuli[read a defense} before making a quick body decision[drive left? right? pass?]

Any physicaly demanding activity can meet many of the criteria of the 4 major 'sports'.

And for quick reflexes and reaction time, there's a little more consequence to some of those physical activities than others...ask the driver of the #7 car...

Reply

People that follow NASCAR especially NEXTEL cup racing learn that there is alot more to the sport than going around in circles...there is alot of stratagy involved...and anyone that can control a car doing 190 mph in traffic like that has got my vote

avatar
Reply

I have to echo AmpLee's posting. 3-4 hours of constant stress instantaneous reactions to situations doing this at track temperatures of over 100 degrees. Having the visual accuity to space yourself within inches of another car at 180 MPH - truly atheltic.

Putting on layers of protective clothing going out on the ice for 5 min. hitting your opponent - sitting down for 10 min - professional hockey now thats a real athlete- HAHA
